Walsenburg
Walsenburg was originally settled as Plaza de los Leones in 1862 but was renamed Walsenburg after Fred Walsen, a businessman who settled in town in about 1870. In Walsenburg, the elk outnumber the people, the bighorn sheep ignore human intruders in their space, special trout waters lie in the very heart of wild mountain splendor, flocks of birds with eight-foot wingspans share the flyways with great V's of geese, ducks and other migratory waterfowl and snow-capped pink granite line the skyline.
